The American Red Cross helps millions of lives each year with the help of its Blood Services Program. In 2015, the American Red Cross collected approximately 5.1 million units of blood from generous donors, which were then sent to thousands of hospitals throughout the country to meet thousands of critical patient needs.
The American Red Cross Blood Services Program dates all the way back to World War II. Official realized that both members of the military and civilians would be in need of large quantities of live saving blood in England, which at the time was facing potential invasion. The U.S. Armed Forces then asked the Red Cross to start a national program whereby volunteers could give blood, and blood was collected and shipped to the British Isles.
Today, the Red Cross collects and distributes approximately 40% of the nation’s blood supply. This need is constant, and never ceases. According to the Red Cross website, “Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion.”
While that statistic is daunting, and the need is great, there is something that many people can do to help. Consider giving the gift of life by donating at a blood drive. The Rancho Sahuarita Clubhouse serves as a local host, hosting several American Red Cross Blood Drives throughout the year.
This summer, a blood drive will take place at the Clubhouse (at 15455 S. Camino Lago Azul, Sahuarita, AZ 85629) on Saturday, June 29th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday, August 31st from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Additional blood drives can be found by visiting the American Red Cross’ main website. To register for a specific blood drive, please call 1-800-733-2767 or log on to redcrossblood.org, and remember that valid identification is required to donate at all blood drives.
