Across the county, homebuilders are looking for new ways that they can offer home product that meets the needs of varying buyers. With thousands of members of the baby boomer generation retiring per year, many are facing choices when it comes to their living situation post-retirement as to whether they’ll move up, downsize, or stay put. A growing trend shows that more parents are moving in with their children (and grandchildren), resulting in the rise of housing elements like “in-law suites”.

Builders such as Lennar are responding to this need, with floorplans like the company’s Next Gen® – The Home Within A Home®, (currently available in many communities, including Rancho Sahuarita’s newest neighborhood of Entrada Del Rio). According to Lennar’s main website, this Next Gen® offers “a home specifically designed for multigenerational living”.

But just as the additional space can be used for elderly parents, it can also be used for a wide variety of other things. The Tucson Division President for Lennar, Tom Gansheimer, has shared that the extra space in these homes has many different potential uses, depending on an individual homebuyers specific needs; such as for college-aged children, man-caves or ladies’ retreats.

In Entrada Del Rio, Lennar’s floorplans in general feature garages with extra storage spaces standard, which can also be converted to an additional bedroom or office if desired (to allow growing families the flexibility and convenience of even more space. Lennar’s homes will feature the builder’s EI-Everything’s Included® program; with features such as Home Automation including their Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ home designs, granite kitchen countertops with a standard under mount sink, standard refrigerator, and window coverings.

Other builders, though not always offering the same option as Lennar, can also offer buyers the flexibility to customize spaces for different family situations as needed. Richmond American Homes, for example, offers floorplans in their neighborhoods with various quantities and ranges of bedrooms and bathrooms available.

As generational changes continue to happen, and families continue to face shifting family dynamics, these types of customizations will likely become more and more commonplace amongst builders to satisfy their buyers.
